What Is a TPMS check?
The tyre pressure monitoring system, or TPMS, is a relatively new addition to modern vehicles. It’s composed of several sensors fitted to each tyre that monitor tyre pressure. If the air pressure suddenly drops (usually 6-8 PSI below normal), you’ll receive a warning via your dashboard.
TPMSs were introduced to help drivers identify slow leaks, punctures, or blowouts. They’re often crucial for run-flat tyres, which will continue to function even after a puncture, and are now a legal requirement for all vehicles.

TPMS Checks
A TPMS check involves inspecting the sensors and detection system to determine it’s working as expected. The sensors are checked for accuracy and response time. If a sensor isn’t working, it can be replaced; sensors cannot be repaired.
The TPMS check has been a standard part of the MOT assessment since 2015. If your TPMS system isn’t working, it’s crucial to get it checked and fixed as soon as possible.
Why Tyre Pressure Matters
Losing tyre pressure on the move can be dangerous, and with run-flat tyres, you might not notice until it’s too late. That’s where your Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) makes all the difference.
By catching issues early, TPMS helps you:
- Avoid dangerous blowouts or sudden loss of control
- Maintain better fuel efficiency
- Reduce uneven tyre wear and extend tyre life
- Spot punctures before they leave you stranded

Frequently asked questions.
Our most frequently asked questions.
A TPMS check isn’t complicated: we review each sensor, ensure batteries are working, and reset the system if necessary. We’ll ensure that your TPMS can accurately detect changes in tyre pressure, such as a slow leak or sudden puncture.
Yes, a broken TPMS sensor is an automatic MOT fail since January 2015. Thankfully, replacing a broken sensor is an easy fix. Save yourself the headache and get it sorted ahead of time.
The most obvious sign that your TPMS needs checking is the warning light on your dashboard. It comes on if one or more of the sensors are faulty. Your vehicle should also alert you if the sensory battery is running low.
Of course, if you haven’t had your TPMS checked in a while (or there’s an MOT coming up), you can still get your TPMS inspected.
A TPMS check, or Tyre Pressure Monitoring System check, is a service where our technicians verify that your vehicle’s TPMS system is functioning correctly. The TPMS is a safety feature in modern cars that monitors the air pressure in your tyres.
